Wolf Haven International, a nonprofit organization founded in 1982, is dedicated to conserving and protecting wolves and their habitats. With sanctuaries in Tenino, Washington, and Bridger, Montana, they provide a safe haven for captive-born wolves and wolf-dogs while also advancing education, advocacy, and habitat restoration efforts. Their mission, "to conserve and protect wolves and their habitat," has guided their work for over 40 years and provided a lifetime home to 325 animals.
The organization was born out of the need to rescue wolves and wolf-dogs who had been bred in captivity and could not survive in the wild. As humans encroached on natural habitats and misconceptions about wolves persisted, Wolf Haven sought to give these animals a safe space to live out their lives. At the same time, they set out to educate the public about wolves’ ecological importance and promote solutions to minimize conflicts between wolves, humans, and livestock.
Wolf Haven is actively involved in conservation and restoration efforts. They are a federally designated partner in the Saving Animals From Extinction (SAFE) programs for endangered Mexican wolves and American red wolves, which have led to the birth of multiple litters at their sanctuary. Several wolf families from Wolf Haven have even been released into the wild, helping to restore populations.
In 2024, Wolf Haven was honored with the Outstanding Wildlife Sanctuary Award from the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS). This prestigious award recognizes their exceptional work in sanctuary care, conservation, and education. As one of over 200 accredited sanctuaries worldwide, Wolf Haven stood out for its dedication to upholding GFAS’s rigorous standards, a distinction they’ve maintained since 2015. This milestone underscores the global impact of their mission and efforts.
You can support Wolf Haven’s incredible work by visiting their sanctuary, sponsoring a wolf, or donating to their programs. Guided tours offer a unique opportunity to learn about wolves and their ecosystems, while donations directly contribute to rescue, conservation, and educational efforts.
